Parent Info and Tips

What to bring/wear to the races

Kids:

    • Change of clothes
    • Extra Socks
    • Book, IPod, cards, homework, etc – for downtime
    • Sleeping bag or old comforter
    • Pillow
    • Plastic bag for wet clothes
    • For rainy days we suggest a pair of those knee high rubber boots

      Parents:

    • Folding lawn chair (you may leave in the trailer week to week)
    • Binoculars
    • Sunglasses for sunny days
    • A Hat (for those rainy, windy, and sunny days)
    • Layer for colder days – it is much colder on the River than you think (you can always take off layers)
    • If it is a rainy day remember we will be standing on the river bank and although we bring hay to soak up some of the water it can get pretty messy – Suggestion: buy a pair of the rubber knee high boots for yourself
    • Book, IPod, etc for the wait in-between races
    • Race times are changed all of the time. Your child may be scheduled for 9am but may get pushed to 12pm or to 8:30am. Kids must be to the site when the coach wants them there. If you cannot be there carpool

Terminology

  1. Head Race – where the boats are grouped and judged by time across all boats. Example: The JV boats are launched in groups of 4 and there are 10 groups. The times for each of the 40 boats are ordered to determine who comes in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd

  2. Catching a Crab – when the water catches the oar and (for lack of a better way to say it), snaps back on the rower. To clear a crab the rower will have to get the oar back in position (see term CRAB below)
